The Incident

In September 2020, Sidiki Diabate, a renowned Malian Kora player, was arrested following accusations of domestic violence by his wife, Mariam Sow, also known as Mamacita. The allegations surfaced after Mamacita’s friend posted photos of her injuries on Instagram, revealing the extent of the abuse. Diabate used an electrical extension cord, a belt, and his hands to inflict these injuries.

The Survivor’s Story

Mariam Sow endured a tumultuous relationship with Diabate from 2013 until her escape in September 2020. The images shared on social media exposed the physical abuse she had suffered. Mamacita’s decision to press charges brought the private violence into the public eye, challenging the impunity often associated with elite figures.

Perpetrator’s Profile

Sidiki Diabate, a celebrated figure in Mali’s music scene, faced immediate repercussions following his arrest. His contract with Universal Studios was suspended, and his award nominations were withdrawn. However, his influence and fame were highlighted again in 2021 when he attempted to tarnish the reputation of another partner on social media. In December 2021 he released a song paying homage to mothers.

Legal Outcome

Diabate was released on bail for 15 million CFA Francs (approximately EUR 22,000) in December 2020. As of September 2021, the case had not yet gone to trial, reflecting potential systemic issues in the legal handling of domestic violence cases, especially involving high-profile individuals.

Legal and Societal Context

Mali’s legal framework stipulates jail sentences of 1 to 5 years and fines for domestic violence, with provisions for enhanced penalties under certain conditions. However, the case underscores a broader societal challenge where elite status can sometimes overshadow legal accountability.
